Dick Richards’ Rules For Networking
collection of people who are committed to one another’s success
__________________________________________________
Know what business you are in
as a person: your genius and purpose
Be attuned to what the universe is telling you,
and create a vision that inspires and compels you
Attend to your vision
and tell others about it
Think of networks as resources for both personal empowerment
and collaboration to create new realities
Be willing to invest youself in helping
others realize their visions
Know, and let others know, what you want
and what you have to offer
Listen carefully for what others want
and what they have to offer
Create linkage between wants,
offerings, and visions
Know that when you choose to give rather than withold,
you enrich and empower an entire network
Believe that when you act, the web of life trembles
Remember that networks are processes with many centers,
and neither structures nor hierarchies
Have fun, celebrate often, and remain positive

Dick…
Brendon gave me another assignment for the weekend which was to read “Never Eat Alone.” I wrote a review on my HR Leaders blog today which was not all that complementary. Bren then sent me a link to your post on networking…that’s how I found you here. Thanks for your insight and clear thinking.

Is it just me or is this much to vague and flowery?
Example: “Be attuned to what the universe is telling you,
and create a vision that inspires and compels you”. The universe doesn’t tell me anything! I’f you’re hearing voices from the universe, get help from a shrink!
“Believe that when you act, the web of life trembles”. Huh?
How about some more practical tips in straightforward language?

Scott, let’s agree that I didn’t write that for you. I am sure that somewhere you can find “practical tips in straightforward language.”
I can offer one tip: if you sincerely want help from people, you are much more likely to get it if you don’t dismiss or insult them while you are asking for it.

OK the. Lets translate the flowery language into something more straightforward.. My translation is in parenthesis
Be attuned to what the universe is telling you,
and create a vision that inspires and compels you (Know your interests and abilities)
Attend to your vision
and tell others about it (Do what interests you and tell others about it)
Think of networks as resources for both personal empowerment
and collaboration to create new realities (Networking will help your personal life and give you resources to do what you want to do)
Be willing to invest youself in helping
others realize their visions (Be willing to help others)
Know, and let others know, what you want
and what you have to offer (Tell others what you want and what you can do)
Listen carefully for what others want
and what they have to offer (Find out what others want and what THEY can do)
Create linkage between wants,
offerings, and visions (Match people with others so their wants and interests coincide)
Know that when you choose to give rather than withold,
you enrich and empower an entire network (Focus on helping people rather than getting something from them)
Believe that when you act, the web of life trembles (Actions speak louder than words)
Remember that networks are processes with many centers,
and neither structures nor hierarchies (You never know who might help you; treat everyone equally)
Have fun, celebrate often, and remain positive (Stay upbeat)
See? Wasn’t that better?

Not better, just different Scott. If it works for you, I’m happy.
I’m curious. What brought you back to this post more than a year after your previous note?
