A Favorite Sentence
For no reason that I can discern at the moment, one of my favorite sentences is occupying my mind. It is from the eulogy for Mickey Mantle written by Bob Costas. Costas is describing how he and his childhood friends felt about Mantle:
We knew there was something poignant about Mickey Mantle before we knew what poignant meant.
I would love to have written that sentence. But I didn’t, so I’m glad Costas did.
And while I am on the topic of sentences that I would love to have written, there are lots of them at Jodee Bock’s blog, You Already Know This Stuff. Here is a current favorite of mine:
As I’ve started listening to my life speak, I find that my true self is, as some have called me, a boat rocker - a limb sitter - a trailblazer.
I like the poetic tone of that. I also like that Jodee, without using my terminology, is talking about her genius.
