Genius, Delights, Needs, and Discipline

Sam Keen pulled a lot of things together with one short sentence in his book, Hymns To An Unknown God. He wrote:

A spiritual calling involves four elements: a gift, a delight, a need, and a discipline.

Adding my own flavor to Keen’s words:

    The gift is your genius.

The delight is your genius at work in a way that brings you joy.

The need that compels you and that you can fulfill is the key to uncovering your purpose.

The discipline is developing yourself in whatever ways are required in order to bring your genius to fulfill your purpose.

Whether or not you think of your work in spiritual terms, as Keen does, he has provided a recipe for making the best use of your unique energy.
