An Experiment With Silence
A friend of mine is experimenting with zipping his lips. He is keeping his mouth shut much more often than had been his habit.
He has made four discoveries:
1. Much of the time it doesn’t really matter to other people if he has an opinion,
2. Unless they are asking a direct question, people often don’t notice when he doesn’t respond to what they say,
3. Sometimes people don’t notice even when they do seem to be asking a direct question,
4. He feels more at peace with himself and with the people around him.
He said, “My wife has fallen in love with me again, and my kids think I’m awesome.”
